CLIP College Hour Report #1
Yesterday I went to a CLIP College Hour in S112. I listened to three presentations. In the beginning, we learned about diversity and especially diversity in QCC. For example, there are spoken, beliefs, race, education and so on. Inclusiveness and respecting diversity are important because this recognizes the value and contributions of all members of our community. Inclusiveness helps us build trust by promoting understanding and breaking down prejudice. After this introduction, the presenters discussed three things about life: sexual harassment, domestic violence, and plagiarism.
The first topic was sexual harassment. They explained that Sexual harassment is disrespectful and offensive. What are the basic elements? Unwelcome, sexual content of an offensive nature is the basic element. A hostile academic environment can include 4 types: verbal, nonverbal, physical, and visual. What should we do if we are harassed? There were two pieces of advice about this; you should ask the harasser to stop and report the problem as soon as possible.
The second topic was Domestic violence. Domestic violence means that people abuse. For example, if a husband hit his wife and children. We saw a movie about that. The movie showed a woman’s husband commit Domestic violence. The woman didn’t have any idea what to do and asked her friends. Finally, the woman was helped by calling 311 and her family. Therefore, she solved the Domestic violence.
The final topic was plagiarism. Plagiarism refers to copying and using others words out reference. We shouldn’t use others words and ideas in our sentences. When we take the test, we can’t copy others words. And when i write essays, we can’t use others ideas or copy from the internet without reference.
We learned about sexual harassment, domestic violence, and plagiarism in this college hour.
